From our front door in Krakow to our apartment in Rome-five hours. Five hours later, we had finished walking through the Roman Forum and the Palatine. We even managed to grab a couple of authentic meals in neighborhood restaurants. What a difference a few hours make.
We rented a flat on via Frangipane, near the Coloseo metro. Looking down the street in the photo above, you can see the Colloseum. We didn't quite make bee line for the Colloseum, but got there soon enough.
Of course, with our standard excellent timing, we hit Rome during Carnaval. And some groups seemed to make the most of it. Why every Andean Indian in Rome turned out to parade was a bit of a mystery, but it made for an interesting cultural juxtaposition.
If anyone knows who the guy in the tree suit (behind the yellow banner, center) is supposed to be, please let me know.
Nonetheless, we saw some pretty spectacular views, like this three-photo merge from the Trajan market toward the Roman Forum, shooting across the Imperial Forum.
Megan even agreed to pose for traditional "let's find an animal among the rocks" photo. The sling is from a self inflicted injury (she fell and wrenched her shoulder/upper arm in Krakow).
From the Garibaldi monument, one can see most of Rome, overlooking Trastavere and the Tiber. Megan is clutching Harry Potter 3 and 4 in English, recently acquired at a bookstore in Trastavere...one more reason to like Rome. She'll finish these books before we hit home.
