Szopki Krakowska

Why the crowd around the Adam Mickiewicz Monument today?

Hmmm, if it is the first Thursday in December it is the annual szopki presentation and tournament.

Szopki are a Christmas tradition that date back to the 19th century.

Just before I entered the fray (I went into 'Hong Kong' mode and became all elbows like everyone else!)

Winners will be announced on Sunday I believe. The most intricate and interesting szopki are added to the permanent collection of the Kraków History Museum.

In typical fashion, this class of school kids was much more interested in feeding the ubiquitous pigeons than looking at the szopki!

  2. Oh I miss miss miss Europe. Here we have bright sunshine (I'm not complaining!) but I miss the atmosphere of European markets and Christmas traditions. Enjoy Barbara!
